Hydnum Steel and Gonvarri Industries sign a strategic agreement to drive the transition to green steel on the Iberian Peninsula
- The Puertollano-based steelmaker will supply the Spanish multinational with decarbonised steel worth an estimated 1 billion euros over an initial seven-year period
- The two companies will also collaborate on logistics optimisation to ensure efficient deliveries, develop low-emission transport solutions and promote green steel in Spain and Europe
Hydnum Steel, the first steelmaker to produce green steel on the Iberian Peninsula, and Gonvarri Industries, a global leader in metal transformation, are joining forces to work towards a more sustainable and innovative industrial model.
The two companies have signed an agreement whereby Hydnum Steel undertakes to supply green steel to the Spanish multinational worth an estimated 1 billion euros over an initial seven-year period. This agreement marks a milestone in the transition towards a more sustainable industry, consolidating both companies as leaders in terms of innovation and environmental responsibility.
Hydnum Steel, which is in the process of building an innovative green steel plant in Puertollano, will become the leading producer of decarbonised steel in Spain. The plant will have production capacity of up to 2.6 million tonnes of flat steel per year.
The agreement between Hydnum and Gonvarri is aimed at promoting the use of green steel in different industries, including construction, energy and the automotive industry, providing high-quality products that meet the strictest environmental standards and positioning Spain as a leader in green steel production in Europe.
According to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed, the companies will collaborate on logistics optimisation to ensure efficient deliveries and develop low-CO2 transport solutions. Both companies consider cooperation and the generation of synergies to be essential to making progress in the decarbonisation of the industry.
Commitment to sustainability
Eva Maneiro, CEO of Hydnum Steel, stresses that “it is not enough to be part of the change, we need to lead it with every tonne of green steel we put on the market and with every innovation that challenges convention to achieve an industry that is truly committed to the future of our planet”.
While Josu Calvo, CEO of Gonvarri, adds that “green steel is essential for meeting the sustainability standards that our customers and society demand. The agreement with Hydnum Steel reinforces this commitment and helps us continue to progress towards cleaner and more responsible steel”.
