Hydnum Steel joins Eurometal to drive innovation and sustainability in the steel industry

- The Puertollano plant, with a capacity of 2.8 million tons per year, will be the largest producer of decarbonized steel in Southern Europe.
Hydnum Steel, Spain’s first emissions-free steel plant and one of the first in Europe, continues to shape the future of steel by joining Eurometal, the European federation for steel, tube, and metal distribution and trade, as an associate member. This step reinforces its commitment to innovation, digitalization, and the decarbonization of the steel sector.
This strategic alliance will allow the company to expand its impact, share knowledge with key industry players, and accelerate its mission: fostering a more sustainable and competitive steel industry. Through Eurometal, Hydnum Steel will actively contribute to the development of solutions that modernize the market and promote a more efficient use of resources.
With this new step, Hydnum Steel strengthens its position as a leader in the steel industry’s transition, focusing on excellence, sustainability, and competitiveness in an ever-evolving market.
Hydnum Steel’s Puertollano plant will produce high-quality rolled steel, integrating renewable energy and green hydrogen into its manufacturing process. With a capacity of 2.8 million tons of flat steel per year, it will become the largest producer of decarbonized steel in Southern Europe.
Its innovative approach also includes the reuse of urban and industrial wastewater, which will be treated and regenerated for production use. This initiative will not only prevent the consumption of clean water and the contamination of aquifers but will also promote water and energy sustainability, making it one of the few steel plants in the world to implement this management model.
The project will generate more than 1,000 direct jobs and 5,000 indirect jobs, boosting Puertollano’s local economy and supporting youth employment. With an investment of €1.65 billion, the plant will be fully digitalized. Hydnum Steel has been recognized as a Priority Project by the Government of Castilla-La Mancha and highlighted by the World Economic Forum as one of the five most innovative projects worldwide in the transition toward decarbonized steel production.
